Collection: Pinguicula (Butterwort)
Pinguicula, commonly known as butterworts, are carnivorous plants that use sticky, glandular leaves to lure, trap, and digest insects in order to supplement the poor mineral nutrition they obtain from the environment.
Generalised Growing Care for Mexican Pinguicula (Please do further research on particular species/hybrids)
Sunlight: Indirect bright light. Pinguicula show their best colour when grown under growlights in cooler conditions. Direct sunlight or light that is too intense will burn Pinguicula.
Temperature:Â Pinguicula are quite tolerant of a variety of temperatures. I can only provide information on what my Pinguicula experience, however I suspect they can tolerate more extreme temperatures within reason. My Pinguicula grow fine in temperatures as low as 10 degrees and as high as 30 degrees (as long as they don't dry out and their roots remain cool).
Watering: Pinguicula like to be moist without being soaked. I use the tray method to water all my Pinguicula. The tray is refilled with water a day after the tray has dried out. When in their succulent phase, they can tolerate dryer conditions and are more susceptible to rot, so be careful to adjust watering accordingly. Rainwater or filtered water is recommended. Watering Pinguicula from above can be done but appears to increase the risk of crown rot and other fungal problems if not managed carefully.Â
Humidity:Â Pinguicula do best in a humidity range between 50% and 80%. The water tray method can help create a micro-climate that raises the humidity around the pot or pots. Good air circulation is also important to ensure they don't catch fungal infections or rot.
Media: I grow all my Pinguicula in a 1:1:1 ratio of peat moss, sand and pumice. A layer of lava rock is added to the surface but is not essential. Other mixes are also fine.
Dormancy: Most Mexican Pinguicula experience a dormancy period, however this is triggered mostly by it's water intake and the photoperiod (less so temperature). Pinguicula will enter a succulent phase where the leaves become much smaller, numerous and condensed (the plant itself will shrink), and are no longer carnivorous. If growing Pinguicula under growlights, I highly recommend matching your growlights to the current photoperiod so your plants adjust accordingly. This will help them flower at the right time of year as they would in the wild.
